AUTOMATIC SCREENSHOT RESIZER

Conflow

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

As 'Picture-Sizes' are getting larger and larger I have noticed that 'Postal-Attachments' are exceeding Laptop-Screen Sizes

and some PC-Monitor Screen sizes. Once opened these 'over-sized' attachments cannot be closed on the Forum-Screen as

the 'Close-Button' is hidden from view ~ here below is a solution.

For those who want to 'attach' Photos & Screenshots to:- Forums, EMails, MsMessenger, iPods, iPhones, Powerpoint and to

other Multi-Media products there is always the vexing problem of:-....What Image-size do I choose ?? ~ whats acceptable ??

"Automatic FreeSizer" attached below is a small powerful utility which does the job automatically and you can review your new

resized Images directly on the Desktop without opening your Image-Editor. You have selectable 'quality-options' and Custom

resizes of your choice. The resized-Images are parked directly below your original Images in their respective Folder.

We find this little Tool an absolute Gem because it removes the uncertainty and does a great job over and over again with the

advantage of being a great timesaver. Hope you find it as useful as I do ~ its great for Forum usage.

There is a forum section on "Equipment & Software" ;)

Regards,

Xaver

Xaver,

I am quite well aware of that fact but in consideration of the hundreds of Forum-Members who are Not as experienced as us

it is appropriate to "introduce" this helpful little Program on the Main Page for maximum exposure so those less adept than us

can be encouraged to use 'Screenshots' with their Posts when explaining their PTE-problems ~ it save time and Postal space.

Furthermore we have a running topic in "Equipment & Software" where we all more or less agree to be more helpful to New Novice

users in their future use of the PTE-Program ~ I posted a Link in that section.

My Posting of this little utility is my way of helping others right now....

What's wrong with using the browser's ability to scroll down until the little "x" becomes visible?

Peter

Peter,

You have selectively picked up on a point I made in my original Post but have ignored the other very

important utility aspects of this little Program where novice-users may want to resize their Photos

and Attachments so they are viewable within EMails, iPhones, iPods, iPads etc, etc; which is the

design intent of the little Program.

To address your point ~ As recently as yesterday I had the experience of trying to close a very large

Post 'Attachment' but the 'Close-Button' was not available even with max-scrolldown so would you please

point me to that little "X" which you mentioned in your Post ~ I cant find it in the (open) Forum-Window

which is "greyed-out" with the oversized attachment Image.

Regards,

Brian.

Brian,

Unless your browser software is of an unusual design, I think you will find that, at the right-hand side of the browser's window, there is a vertical scroll bar. I think you will find that left-clicking on that, holding the click down and moving the mouse in an up-and-down direction will achieve what is called a "vertical scroll" of the contents of the browser window. It certainly does in a good browser like Firefox. ;)

Peter

P.S. It is so difficult to convey sarcasm in the printed word. And I do apologise for being sarcastic. I do not deny that the software has its merits - but to state that it was not possible to get to the "little X" was plain wrong!

5 unnecessary replies, when surely a simple thank you would have been better, so thanks Brian for this useful tool.

Geoff,

Thats much appreciated and I note that there has been 17 downoads so far so it must be usefull to some Members.

Peter,

With respects you do not need to tell me how to use a Browser Scroll-Bar and in IE-8 (which millions use)

there is no little "X" on the R/H bottom section of the IE-8 Browser-Window which when an "oversized"

attachment is used in the PTE-Forum that attachment "greys-out" the Browser-window and the only solution

is to close the IE-8 Browser (thus closing the PTE-Forum) and thus obliging one to re-open the Browser

and re-log on to the PTE Forum ~ that to me is not acceptable !!

The next time it happens I shall bring that problem to Igor's attention as I am quite sure there must be a

size limit to Image-Attachments. (See attachment ~ Resized to show "Close Button")

Brian,

The way the forum software seems to work (on Firefox) is that the display of an attached image "greys out" the main forum window. But I have always been able to scroll down in the browser to see the "Close X" on the frame of the image and to click on the X to close the Image display pop-up. The image pop-up is not "grey-ed out" as well. It just uses grey as its colour scheme. Are you saying that the image pop-up is also totally "greyed out" and totally inactive? If that is so, I would suggest that it is either a bug in IE8 or a bug in the way the image display feature is working with IE8.

This is what I meant by you being wrong. In Firefox one can scroll down over a large image until one sees that "Close X" and can then click on it to close down the image pop-up. There would, I'm sure, have been a massive outcry from the forum members if other browsers had not worked that way.

Peter

It works the way Peter says in IE8, it's just a fag to do if someone posts a really large image, (usually new users). Most forums I use give an optimum image size they support, for some reason PTE doesn't, (as far as I know, other than avatars)

Eric,

Just an information: Some screen shots that you have attached have a size of 1280x1024, not really large, but: In Firefox these images will be shown a bit enlarged, too large for a monitor of size 1680x1050 :(

What about resizing your attachments, an easy exercise with your image viewer or image editor. You do not need to bother your system with additional software :)

ReplyAs above ~ Yes that is the problem ~ I get 'locked-out' if Image sizes are above 2500.Pix/Width and its nothing to do with

IE-8 as this works perfectly on another Forum and always works properly with different Search-Windows and other Web-Sites.

As a motte point ~ recently on the Forum I have seen Images well into the 3000.Pix/Width from those who should know better.

Xaver,

Yes you are correct ~ I also have seen this problem and its real bad with 1280x800 Displays.

Eric,

Yes your're right ~ its a real bummer, and I note your point about other Forums' size restrictions.

Tom,

Many thanks for your suggestion ~ Yes it works but in IE-8 you loose the connectivity to the Forum.

There is a real issue with "oversized" Attachments and it seems to be randomised depending on the Browser and Search-Page

being used and 'non-restriction widths' in some Forums. Its the reason why the Automatic-Resizer was designed in the first

place and for us it was a Godsend not having to close down IE-8 eash time someone parked a "Monster-Attachment" on the Forum.

Many thanks to all for your help and suggestions and I do hope that the little Program helps those who need it.

Most of the screen shots I use on here are from PTE's construction pages, where depending on the monitor size, seeing/reading it may be a problem, particularly the text. As there are many monitor sizes, I think the size I reduce to may be a little too large for a particular monitor, but at least they can usually be read. So unless someone comes up with a universally acceptable size I will continue. Maybe Igor could introduce a "Fix slide size in pixels" feature to user posts.

PS I don' use any dedicated re-sizing software

Eric and All,

Eric I really do appreciate your last Post and the Attachment ~ And by way of example I have "Full Screen-Copied"

your attachment as it appears on a HP-Laptop 15½" Screen of 1200x800 Pixels ~ which is a very common Laptop-Format.

You can see for yourself how big it really is on a 15"-Laptop and how marginal the "Close-Button" is to the edge and there is no

more adjustment latitude for scrolling...

Others "without consideration" park monster Attachments on the Forum and thats happening regularily as time goes by. It may

be that they simply dont know, or dont use an Image-Editor, or cant use one, but at least the Automatic-ReSizer does it for them.

Edit:

As far as IE-8 is concerned the only way of getting large Images on to a 15"Screen is to use the Magnification-Tool in the 'Status-Bar'

provided the Tool is turned on. (As shown in attachment~ the 100% Box lower Right)

Best regards,

Brian.

Tom,

Many thanks ~ those Images worked perfectly on 15" Laptop-Screens ~ I must say, "beautiful shots".

I have done some calculations in respect of 15" Laptop Screeens and the results are as,viz:-

1)

Browsers with a Left-Side Tool/Folder-Panel = Image Size should not exceed 850.Pixel wide (approx).

2)

Full Browser Window (No side Panels) = Image Size should not exceed 1050.Pixel wide (approx).

3)

Your Images from the left are approx:- 800.Pix ~ 650.Pix ~ 800.Pix - roughly what I had calculated.

in (1) above.

These measurements only apply to Forum attachments.

Yachtsman - same thing happens to me on my 1280x1024 monitor. However, if I click the "Save" button at the bottom, the image resizes to fit in the screen. Also, the EXIF data shows it is a 1224x979 photo (which should fit the screen naturally, and which also means that the resizing it does reduces it to LESS than full pixel size) but it also has been saved at 255dpi which may have an effect on how it displays.

Very Mysterious.

Eric & Argonaut,

Yes many Laptop & Monitor Screens behave differently for a given Screen-size ~ for example a 15" Screen

will behave diferently on a Laptop compared to a Desktop-Monitor. The Image-Exif Data is usually correct

so why the differences ??

That depends on the Native-Resolution of the Screen in terms of Pixel-width x Pixel-height and how much

Safe-area the Manufacturer has given on the RH.side of the Screen and whether the Screen has been Set-up

for:- "Full-Screen" or "Centre-Desktop" or "Preserve-Aspect Ratio"

How do you know ?? please see the attachment (with Instruction) as to what the (generic) Native-Resolution

of your Screen really is. Be aware that there will be a ±5% error of the given figures due to Manufacturers

"Sides-overaps" this to counteract dead-edges in the visable Display.

As you will see, there are many "interactive-options" available when setting-up your Screen but do try and

keep it at its Native-Resolution (Full-Screen) the other selections are for specialist work solely.
