Eric,

Concerning the PC currently giving you issues ... I would begin first with checking out if your WMI Service needs repair. This can cause improper Nvidia Driver installation. See "nvidia_release_notes_2.jpg" for additional details.

You should also re-install (possiblly first un-install current) Nvidia Drivers from Nvidia Site directly. See "nvidia_release_notes_1.jpg" for additional details. If the newest/latest Nvidia Drivers dont seem to solve any issues ... you may want to download an older/previous versions and test. (Please remember that your WMI Service needs to be checked/corrected first)

*The above info was obtained from Nvidia Driver Release Notes 331.65

*This is just a simple operation to start off the problem solving.

Thanks Stu

I'll file all that untill the new PC arrives & is up & running , the old one has been mothballed & I'm limping along using my LT & old monitor at present.

Hi Eric,

I can't believe it takes 10+ days to build and ship a PC in England. In the US you can order and receive a PC in a couple of days (Dell/HP/Lenovo/...). They must build them and "burn them in" (heat room) for a few days before shipping.smile.gif

Hi Tom

This is not a major manufacturer, so build time can run up to 28 days, however they do have a wip systemn to keep you up to date on progress. See https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/about-us/

Hello Eric,

Well, your upgrade enthusiasm got to me, I am now upgrading my desktop from an Asus P4-800E motherboard and P4 Pentium 3.00ghz with 4 GB memory to this:

1 x Gigabyte GA-Z87X-UD4H Intel Z87 ATX Haswell LGA1150.

1 x Intel Haswell Core i5 4670 3.40GHz 6MB LGA1150.

1 x Kingston HyperX Predator 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3-1866 CL9 (KHX18C9T2K2/8X).

1 x Microsoft Windows 7 Professional 64-Bit (Full Version)

The bits are due any day now, and will be built over the weekend, using my current case, 500GB WD Black HDD and 400-watt power supply, and two 1TB outboard drives.

I haven't ordered a graphics card as the on-board graphics are supposed to be adequate, but time will tell on that. I don't know at this stage whether the onboard graphics will allow a monitor profile from my Spyder2Pro calibrator - if not, then a graphics card will be needed, as I need a calibrated monitor

Cheers,

Colin

Hi Colin

That power supply sounds a bit light from what I have & what I ordered, particularly if you are going to fit an extra high spec graphics card? Although, I ordered a higher wattage supply to what PC Specialists wizard had picked, (belt & braces). :unsure:/>/>/> :unsure:/>/>/> :unsure:/>/>/>

Colin,

You may want to investigate if your old/current 400W powersupply is compatible for use on Haswell systems. Ive read alot of these systems have had issues when not using Haswell Approved ATX12V2 power supplies. Check the boards manufacture site for a list ... it could save you from alot of future headaches and troubleshooting down the road.

* Usually a printed notification of this power supply requirement is within the boards packaging ... which many users have ignored to read or overlooked.

* Some power suppy models claim to be Haswell Ready ... but in some cases these units are not fully Haswell Approved. It can be a cat and mouse game to verify.

Well it arrived, it didn't work & after 2 hours with PCS help line finding uninstalled drivers & loose connections, it is lying in bits on my desk. :angry:/> More later.

Ok, thanks for the heads-up on that, my power supply is about 7 years old anyway, so will investigate. Seasonic seems a good brand.

Geez Eric, what a let-down for you. There'd be some flowery language around here if that happens with my build, which I am doing myself. I hope you get it sorted asap.

Colin

The OS should have the drivers pre-installed on a custom built PC. A long time ago it was fun to build my own PCs but I lost interest since I usually didn't save money. Hope it's a minor problem. It should be a very fast PC and PTE should run great.

Hi Tom & Colin

I didn't get a chance to test any shows, as soon as I found I couldn't get the internet I rang their "helpline", 2.5 hours later after I found I had to fit an outside aerial to the Asus motherboard, which there was no mention of in the start up blurb, then finding the loose aerial connections on the MB which meant removing the caseing to get at the back of them. Then finding the asaus drivers for the wireless section of the MB weren't installed, Then the mb wireless wouldn't accept my wireless hubs signal I threw the towel in. When I think back on what the "help" was getting me to do, such as delving inside the live casing, I could have been killed. After the "help" gave up I was instructed to ring BT to resolve the wireless problem, after a further 45 minutes with them, they decided the wireless drivers in the hub were too old for the the asus driver to recognise & are sending a new hub & it will be Monday before it arrives :(/>

In the meantime I think I will reconnect the "new" PC to the monitor via the HDMI hub I bought so I could use one monitor on the old & "new" PC's & give it a go with a couple of shows, don't want to do too much in case it has to be RTB. I'm back on the LT & monitor so I can use the 'net. It's a nightmare, our retro GPlan desk is littered with PC parts, there's steam coming out of my ears, Margaret has hidden in a corner :ph34r:/> , not what I expected after shelling out best part of £1k. More later. :(/>

Strewth Eric, that's pretty p*** poor service, I don't blame your wife for hiding in the corner, best to make oneself scarce, and she knows it.

Nothing doing here either, courier didn't call today, so it'll be Monday here too before I can do anything.

One thing from a long-time tech, you can't get killed from a PC motherboard, the maximum accessible voltage is only 12 volts, in fact you're more likely to kill the board than yourself - that's unless you open up the power supply, where lurks a huge capacitor charged up to 325 volts, the peak voltage from the 230-volt RMS mains voltage.

It's a pity I don't live closer, we could drown our problems at the local watering-hole.

PS: I hope you use a grounding strap around your wrist when working on your computer, with the other end properly earthed.

Commiserations,

Colin

It is frustrating when we get these issues, but when you have a PC built I think there can be a difference with the configuration. Rightly or wrongly there is an assumption that the user will take it the rest of the way once the parts have all been hooked up. I think it's a bit different to one you buy off the shelf, that is already configured with all those unwanted programs that pop up for a month afterwards asking you to trial them or buy them.

Take a deep breath, it will all come out in the wash and valuable experience will be obtained along the way.

Update

Got the lt & "new" dt connected to one monitor via the HDMI hub,The hub worked straight off although there is a delay of a couple of seconds when switching. Installed a couple of exe.s, they ran fine. Installed elements 10 OK. Swapped some large files from a memory stick 3.5gb through the usb3 port, took about 5 minutes. About to install Camtasia from the disc. Won't install PTE until I'm on the 'net.

put it on a table beside you or rig a swing away cupholder away from the keyboards

I use a kvm switch to join my 2 dt's -1 keyboard, mouse, monitor -- 32 keystrokes swing systems

looks like 10

ken

Hi Ken Just had a look for a KVM switch & it sounds like buying one is a bit of a lottery, checked Amazons selection from £12 to £26+, the one they are fronting had lots of bad feedback see-

"" I would like to inform you that the CS22u is a very basic switch, although the specification states it is able to support the Superior video quality - up to 2048 x 1536; DDC2B, this only applies to monitors which are sized between 17 and 19inch standard ratio. In your Case you are using a widescreen monitor which is 23inch wide, in order to overcome this issue, we recommend for users to use KVM switches which support Video Dyna Sync and also one which is able to support widescreen resolutions. " i.e. not this one"

What model is yours?

More Progress

Transferred files from LT to new PC using a Belkin Easy Transfer cable. Pretty straight forward if XP or W7 to W7 or W8 64bit, can't transfer 32bit to 64 bit or Vista to W7 or 8. One word of caution, try to transfer all your files in one go, the system doesn't allow for files already transferred, so you could end up with duplicates. One mistake I made was to transfer evetything to my C drive, then had to separate the E drive stuff. Other than that quite happy. System very fast compared to old PC & LT.
