Creating AVI files [CLOSED]

Hi,

When I save a project (18 minutes duration) as an AVI file on my win7 PC, it plays back smoothly for the first 5 minutes or so and then stops with a message "not compatible with windows media player".

I tried saving the file to a memory stick and then playing on my win 8 laptop or my new smart TV. The file runs to the end but it is jerky.

By that I mean the scrolling text on the first image is jerky as it moves up from the bottom of the screen and 3 - 4 times during playback an image and corresponding audio freezes for several seconds.

I have tried re-saving to a different memory stick but the have same results.

Note: When saved as a DVD, it runs perfectly on any of the above.

Any ideas appreciated as I need to run this project at a public exhibition through a smart TV.

A few questions before commenting.

What size is the exe file, does the exe file run OK, what version of PTE are you using, what is your show made up of, eg pictures & audio - JPEGs, MP3's, video? Finally details of the hardware the show was built on.

By the way, It was Yachtsman1 who asked the questions.

The first thing that jumps out is the file size, if this is the EXE size it's way over the limit of 2GBish recently discussed in another thread.

Next your hardware is very similar to mine, so I can't see any problems there, however you don't state the laptop hardware details?

Scrolling text can be difficult to to get it to look smooth, exe's are usually pretty fair if you adjust what settings there are, (see screen shots).

You don't state the type of Audio WAV MP3 etc. When giving details throw everything in, more is better than having to keep asking.

Other than that I can't go much further, if anyone else wishes to jump in, please do.

Windows Media Player has many playback limitations. The recommended player for these types PTE video files (AVI, MP4) is Media Player Classic ... or a media player with similar capabilities.

* For best playback and quality results especially when using panning options ... Publish as a HD Video ( MP4) This type video file requires a player such as Media Player Classic, as Windows Media Player is not up to the task.

* As for Smart TV via USB playback ... the TV itself must be capable for video/movie playback. Not all TVs have this feature .... or its somewhat limited in its file/encoding types for playback.

Ok, to answer your questions. My laptop runs win8 64 bit. It runs an Intel i5 with 8GB RAM and has both HD and SSD. The audio files are Windows Media Audio files (.wma).

Now the good news is that I got it to run smoothly by saving the project as an MP4, HD @ 1280 x 720. Initially I saved it to the wrong screen size but soon realised my mistake. It works on my PC, laptop and both TVs. Interestingly, the file size reduced from 3.6GB (AVI) to 840 MB (MP4), so maybe it was the file size?

This is a steep learning curve but I'm enjoying it.

A bit of background to put things in context.

I am a member of a local photography club and primarily use Lightroom and Photoshop. Recently I began using my SLR (both still and video) to capture special occasions for my family / grandchildren and saving them to DVD. That's why I researched and now use PTE.

This came to the attention of my wife's art society who asked me to build them a web site and prepare a promotional video for their exhibitions. The web site is up and running (another steep learning curve) and now I have the video.

At some stage I would like someone to review the video so that I can learn from a profession critique.

Glad things worked out OK. If you post a link to yours or the art groups web site, if the video is streamable I'm sure members will be pleased to give their opinions. However at the size it is now you wouldn't be able to upload it to Slide Show Club, Dropbox or Mediafire unless you have a pro account on the last two.
